Understanding how the heart works
To understand the usefulness of a pacemaker, it is important to know how your heart naturally beats:
- The heart is a muscular pump with four chambers (two atria and two ventricles)
- A natural electrical system coordinates the contractions of these chambers
- Electrical impulses originate from the sinus node (the “natural pacemaker”) in the right atrium
- A normal resting heart rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute
When this electrical system fails, the heart may beat too slowly (bradycardia), causing fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, or even fainting.
